Los Angeles is a bright city, so this is not a desert sky — but out on Santa Monica Bay, away from the street lights, the moon, the planets and the brightest stars look completely different. On a clear night it is a quiet side of LA most people never see.
Pick a boat, bring blankets and something warm to drink, and the captain takes you out after dark. A star-map app on your phone lets you name what you are looking at.
Good to know
- Clear nights around the new moon are darkest; a bright moon is great for the moon itself.
- Bring warm layers and blankets — it gets cold on the water after dark.
- Want a darker sky? Ask about an overnight Catalina trip.
- Night departures depend on weather; the captain makes the final call.
- Departs from Fisherman's Village, 13701 Fiji Way, Marina del Rey.
